Mentoring for Success

Maximizing the chance of progress and success of the mentee

Do you want senior employees to transmit their knowledge, wisdom, social capital, and psychosocial support to young and less experienced persons? This instrument shows participants what to do and tell to their mentee during face-to-face meetings to promote his development and success.

Mentoring for Success provides complete action planning for mentors. It helps them to use the six core mentoring behaviors equally to establish an open and productive mentoring relation. It also covers what not to do so as to avoid problems and complaints.

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn to be highly effective by practicing and using a range of behaviors: providing information, good examples, and advice as the mentee advances.
  • Practice and improve mentoring, coaching, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Update your knowledge and provide the mentee with the opportunity to join your network and to develop his or her own.
  • Explore the principles of the six mentoring styles: Empathize, Advise, Advocate, Challenge, Role Model, and Plan.

Why is mentoring important?

According to a survey by Development Dimensions International—which included leaders and human resources representatives—91% of leaders who have reported using a coach or mentor found the experience greatly beneficial to their careers.

1) Mentors establish a positive personal relationship. Mentees often gain a sense of self-worth when they recognize that another adult is willing to invest time and energy into them.

2) Mentors help develop life skills such as decision-making, long-range planning, communication, time management and goal-setting skills.

3) Mentors are knowledgeable about the social services in their mentees' communities and can be part of a "mentor network", which can provide guidance to mentees.

4) Mentors are aware of and able to interact with other social and cultural groups, and to understand the current issues that affect mentees.

The 6 Mentoring Behaviors

Empathize: You listen to, appreciate and understand your mentee.
Advise: You share information and resources to help make good decisions.
Advocate: You support and help your mentee network.
Challenge: You help your mentee grow and develop.
Role Model: You teach by example and share personal experiences.
Plan: You help your mentee develop and pursue constructive goals.
