Learning Outcomes

  • Solve common problems, improve team communication, and involve individuals in the team mission.
  • Identify how to engage team members in productive teamwork, in group decision-making and self-management.
  • Understand and appreciate the advantages of motivation, diversity and coaching.
  • Explore the principles of the 7 team leadership factors: Team Formation, Boundary Management, External Communications,
Internal Communications, Team Vision, Performance Management, and Team Development.

Why is team leadership increasingly important?

1) We still assess and train team leaders with older top-down models of leadership that have proven NOT to be applicable to the more participative, project-oriented work of the team leader today. All leaders are team leaders. They need to develop skills different from the traditional leadership and management models and assessments.

2) Work is more collaborative and project oriented than ever. Competencies like boundary management, team vision, and team development are a part of daily life for most workplace leaders. We need to assess and develop these competencies.

3) External and internal communications, emotional intelligence, developmental leadership, and other competencies are among the most important for leaders today (especially for team leaders). Yet they are left out of older assessment and training models.

4) The baby boomers are retiring, leaving a leadership vacuum. Who will lead groups and teams to high productivity and engagement. The Team Leadership Inventory model defines and develops competencies needed in the next generation of leaders.

The 7 Team Leadership Factors

Team Formation: You establish and cultivate the team.
Boundary Management: You manage barriers to teamwork.
External Communications: You make sure the team communicates throughout the organization.
Internal Communications: You encourage open and rich communications inside the team.
Team Vision: You make sure the team understands and is focused on its mission.
Performance Management: You ensure common goals and objectives.
